I am a journalist and web developer living in Los Angeles and working for the Los Angeles Times.
I went to the University of Florida, where I studied journalism and worked at The Alligator as the online editor. In another life, I wrote a bunch of C and C++ before decided I wanted to be a writer and a journalist. Then one day, I realized I didn't have to choose between computers and journalism.
There's a whole world of Computer-Assisted Journalism out there. You can mine data with Excel and Python and R and SQL and geospatial analysis. It's not as hard as you might imagine, and there's a ton of data out there to be pored over.
Mainly, I work in Python, Django and Javascript. Mix in geospatial analysis with ArcGIS and PostGIS, a little R here and there, and you've got a large portion of my job.
When I'm not writing code, there's a good chance I'm either hiking or eating.
